I brought in a mantel clock that had been in my family for a long time — it stopped about ten years ago and I had never quite gotten around to finding someone I trusted with it. The written report they gave me before any work started was thorough and honest. The clock has been running since February and has not needed anything since.

My grandfather's pocket watch needed attention and I was careful about who I gave it to. Balance Wheel took the time to explain what was original on the movement and what had been replaced by a previous repairer at some point. That kind of information was exactly what I was looking for. The turnaround took a few extra days but the work was worth it.

I brought in two wall clocks for assessment, not sure which was worth servicing and which was not. The assessment report answered that clearly and sensibly. I proceeded with one and decided to hold on the other for now. No pressure either way, which I found reassuring. The assessed fee was credited toward the service — that is a fair arrangement.

I had bought a German wall clock at an auction and was not sure of its history. The consultation was educational — they identified the movement maker, explained its type, and noted what it would need. I left with a much better understanding of what I had acquired. That alone was worth the assessment fee, and I have since commissioned the full service.

I was pleased that they kept me informed throughout. When they found additional wear that required attention, they called before proceeding and explained the options. Small thing perhaps, but it makes a real difference when you're leaving something valuable with a workshop for several weeks.

My late father's pocket watch had not run for years. I wanted it serviced, and the team here was careful to ask what I wanted the outcome to be — was it to have it running regularly, or to have it in better condition as a keepsake? That question alone told me they understood the work. The movement now runs, and the case was cleaned without anything being over-polished.

Three Projects in Detail
Case Study · Wall Clock
A French-Cased Westminster Chime Clock, Condition Unknown
The Situation
A French-cased Westminster chime clock had been silent for approximately fifteen years. The owner had no record of its history and was uncertain whether the movement was intact or had been damaged at some point. They were reluctant to commit to a service without understanding the condition first.
What We Did
An assessment was carried out within ten days. The movement was intact but had significant dried lubricant, four worn pivot holes, and a broken chime spring. We documented these findings and presented three options to the owner with indicative costs. They chose to proceed with the full service, accepting one replacement part.
The Outcome
The clock was returned to the owner after six weeks. It has been running since December 2024 and the chime sequence is consistent. The owner has since brought a second piece for assessment. Total time from first enquiry to collection: approximately eight weeks.
Case Study · Pocket Watch
A Late 19th-Century Swiss Open-Face Pocket Watch, Inherited
The Situation
The owner had inherited a pocket watch from a relative and wanted it in working order without compromising the original finish. A previous attempt at servicing by another party had left the movement running irregularly and the dial with a small mark where a tool had slipped.
What We Did
The movement was disassembled, cleaned, and the source of the irregular running identified as an improperly fitted replacement part. We discussed options for that part with the owner and agreed on a correct period-appropriate replacement. The dial mark was not touched, on the owner's instruction.
The Outcome
The watch now keeps reasonable time and the movement has returned to its original character. The owner was satisfied that nothing was done beyond what was agreed, and the dial mark — a small part of the piece's history — remains as found.

Two Mantel Clocks Acquired at Auction: Deciding Which to Service
The Situation
A collector had acquired two mantel clocks at auction, both non-running. The provenance of each was limited and neither had any documentation. The client wanted an honest assessment of what each piece was, what it would need, and whether the cost of servicing was sensible given the pieces' likely value.
What We Did
Both pieces were assessed over two weeks. The reports identified one as a mid-range German movement in serviceable condition with moderate work needed, and the second as a piece with a replaced movement that was incompatible with the case — a significant discovery. The collector received honest cost projections for each.
The Outcome
The collector commissioned the service for the first clock and decided not to proceed with the second, finding the information we provided helpful in their collecting decisions going forward. The assessment fee for the first clock was credited toward the service cost.
