Why Balance Wheel

The Reasons Owners Return to Us, Year After Year

There are several workshops in the city. What we offer is a particular way of working — considered, transparent, and unhurried — that suits certain owners and certain pieces very well.

Six Things That Define Our Approach

Owner-Led Decisions

Nothing is done without your agreement. The assessment report comes first; the work follows only if you wish it to.

Written Reports as Standard

Every assessment produces a written document in plain language. You keep it. It forms the basis of any further work you choose to commission.

Preservation Over Replacement

We do not reach for new parts when the original can be conserved. The patina and character of an old piece is something worth keeping.

Formal Horological Training

Our lead technicians have undergone structured horological training. This is not a general repair workshop that also takes clocks.

Open Communication Throughout

We keep you informed at each stage of a project. You will not be left wondering where things stand or when to expect a call.

Established KL Workshop

We are based on Jalan Tun Razak and have been there long enough to be known in the community. You are welcome to visit and see the work firsthand.

Expertise

Training in the Discipline, Not Just the Trade

Horology is a specific discipline. The principles that govern a lever escapement, a cylinder escapement, or a verge and crown wheel are not interchangeable, and approaching one as though it were another creates more problems than it solves. Our principal technicians have undergone formal training and have worked on a wide variety of movements. This background shapes how we approach every job — not as a sequence of tasks, but as a diagnostic and restoration process that requires understanding before action.

  • Experience with English, French, German, and Swiss movements
  • Pocket watches from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century
  • Wall and mantel clocks in a range of case types and styles

Tools & Methods

The Right Instruments for Delicate Work

We use ultrasonic cleaning equipment for movement components, watchmaker's staking sets, and magnification tools suited to work at the scale of antique movements. We do not use generic repair tools not designed for the purpose. The choice of instrument matters at this level of work, and we have equipped the workshop with this in mind.

  • Ultrasonic cleaning for precision components
  • Horological loupes and bench microscope
  • Watchmaker's lathe for bushing and staff work

Client Experience

A Quiet, Considered Relationship

Some workshops feel transactional. You leave something, you receive a bill, you collect it. We think the experience of having a piece worked on should be more thoughtful than that — particularly when the piece has sentimental or historical value. We take the time to explain what we have found and what we propose. We welcome questions. We do not use technical language to make you feel that you should simply trust us and step back.

Informed Owners

Clear language, not jargon

Value

Transparent Pricing and No Surprises

Our pricing is stated upfront. The assessment fee of RM 620 is applied toward any further work you commission, so it is not an additional cost if you proceed. For the clock and pocket watch services, we provide a fixed price based on the assessment findings. There is no basis for an unexpected addition to the bill at the end of a project.

  • Assessment: RM 620 (credited toward further work)
  • Wall & mantel clock service: RM 2,800
  • Pocket watch restoration: RM 1,950

Outcomes

Timepieces That Run Well and Last

The goal of a properly serviced movement is reliable, measured timekeeping sustained over years. We service to a standard that accounts for this — not the minimum required to get a piece running, but the level of work that means it will continue to perform without early return visits. Clients who have brought us pieces report that the results have lasted, and many bring further pieces to us over time as a consequence.

What Sets Us Apart

Distinctive Features of Our Workshop

The Assessment Credit Model

We know of no other workshop in Kuala Lumpur that applies the diagnostic assessment fee toward the cost of subsequent work. We introduced this because we felt it was the right structure for a relationship built on informed decision-making.

A Workshop Open to Visit

You are welcome to come in and see where your piece will be worked on. We believe that the character of a workshop tells you something about how work is carried out in it. Ours is tidy, well-lit, and properly equipped.

Plain Language Practice

Our written assessments are produced for the owner, not for another horologist. We explain what we have found in terms that make sense to someone who has not spent years in the trade, because it is your piece and your decision.

Realistic Timelines, Honestly Given

We tell you how long something will take based on how long it actually takes. If circumstances change, we call. We do not promise a timeframe we cannot keep, and we do not rush work to meet a commitment we should not have made.
